My 2001 Florida trip featured my first visit to Universal Studios Orlando, after living practically next door to the Hollywood Studio and Tour all my life. I was a bit curious to see how the Orlando version would pull off the concept, considering it's not really an active movie studio, but was designed as a theme park from the start -- the opposite is true of the Southern California version, which began hosting film production about a century ago and only much later added the Tour attractions.
I'd come close to touring the Orlando park during my 2000 trip when I visited Universal's Islands of Adventure -- literally right next door to the Studio site -- but I simply ran out of time. Since a good friend and colleague of mine had designed attractions for Islands, I wanted to ensure I saw his work on my first Orlando vacation. I enjoyed IOA, and more all about it as soon as I open that site, but I was disappointed that I missed out on the Studios at the time. I made up for it this year, and highlights of my experience follow.
Grab your admission pass to the park, and let's Ride the Movies, as they say in Universal-speak.
